Meet Max, this week’s Kenosha.com Pet of the Week. His name certainly fits. He’s 6 years old, 37 pounds of black-and-white fluff, and he’s waiting at the Wisconsin Humane Society Kenosha Campus for someone to notice what the staff there already knows — this dog is something special.

The first thing most people notice? His eyes. Max has heterochromia, meaning each eye is a different color. It’s the kind of detail that stops people in their tracks, and once he has your attention, his personality does the rest. Staff describe him as joyful and animated, the kind of dog who will keep you laughing with his silly antics on a random Tuesday afternoon.

He’s been waiting long enough that WHS has made him a Benchwarmer — which means his adoption fee is now name-your-own, and there’s a 7-day tryout option if you want to bring him home before making it official.

Max is already set up for a healthy start with his next family. He’s been neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped — the groundwork is done.

At 37 pounds, Max is a solid medium-size dog — manageable on a leash, substantial enough to keep up on walks and adventures, compact enough to settle comfortably in an apartment or a house. His animated, playful personality means he’ll do best with someone who enjoys an engaged, interactive dog rather than one who sleeps in the corner all day.

The one household note: Max needs to be the only pet. No cats, no small animals. For a single-pet home or a family looking for their one dog, that’s a non-issue — and it means he gets all the attention to himself.

Because Max is a Benchwarmer, WHS offers a 7-day tryout before you commit. You bring him home, let him settle in, see how he fits into your space and your routine — and if it’s a match, you complete the adoption paperwork online from home without even making another trip to the shelter.

Onyx, a 1-year-old male and Shasta, a 2-year-old female and is currently in a Kenosha-area foster home, are cats also available for adoption. The campus also has several young cats and kittens if a feline companion is what you’re looking for — just not for Max’s household.
